Brief Description:

We do not only inherit the earth from our ancestors, we also borrow it from our children. -Ancient Proverb

The Environmental Service Learning Initiative is a Teacher Support and Development, Youth Leadership, Service Learning and Environmental Awareness program. ESLI is unique because it blends environmental justice with

  • Art and music
  • Re-indigenization of what is it means to be “green” or “sustainable”
  • Student leadership and ownership in the classroom
  • The SFUSD’s 3R’s: Relevance, Rigor and Relationships
  • Support for the mission and goals of the school partners

ESLI is implemented in three strategies: Full Scale Implementation in which we work directly in the classroom with teachers, Paced Integration in which we award mini grants to interested schools and our City Wide Campaign ranging from city wide events and contests. ESLI is currently partnered with 8 schools across the San Francisco Unified School District.
