Brief Description: The SFGSA serves children and families of San Francisco by promoting and supporting green schoolyards. Each semester we offer a teacher training series called The Ecology of the School Garden in partnership with the SF Botanical Garden Society. The series is designed to deepen classroom teachers' understanding of the ecological and scientific principals at work in the outdoor classroom. Topics covered include: botany and plant science, life cycles, nature in our city, and plant and animal interactions. The series inspires and empowers teachers to effectively use their outdoor classroom to enrich students' learning within the curriculum and beyond. The series us underwritten by grants to keep the cost extremely low and dinner is provided. Garden coordinators and parents are also invited to participate. Also, SFGSA offers a special parent workshop called Garden Works that is designed to train parents on how to become an effective school garden volunteer. School communities should contact us to schedule a workshop. SFGSA Resources: Curriculum Library: We house a large School Garden Curriculum Library at our offices at 135 Van Ness Ave., Room 408. School garden curriculum is plentiful and rich -schools do not need to write their own curriculum for use in the outdoor classroom (unless they want to). Please contact us if you would like to use the library. SFUSD schools are free to photo copy lessons and materials at no charge. Horticultural Resources: SFGSA can provide soil, mulch, and compost to SFUSD schools. Each school site is allowed one debris pick-up and one soil, compost, or mulch delivery per school year. Please contact us to find out how to schedule a pick-up or delivery. Schools that do not need a large amount of materials can access our materials yard to acquire their desired amount. Please contact us for instructions. SF Bay Area Green Schoolyard Resource Directory: We have compiled the "yellow pages" for school gardens and green schoolyards in the Bay Area. You can download it for free as a PDF here: http://www.sfgreenschools.org/resources.html or you may contact us to order a hard copy for $15. School Garden Hotline: SFUSD schools are encouraged to contact us if they have questions or concerns about their existing or nascent garden programs. 415.355.6979, ext. 1565 or 1566 |
