Brief Description: Habitat Heroes: Environmental Service Learning (grades 3 to 12) Students participate in taking care of their National Park lands in the Presidio and emerge with a deeper sense of place. Working with park staff, they learn about San Francisco’s natural history, investigate resource management issues in the field, and gain a wider understanding of urban ecology as they apply their skills to a habitat restoration project. Students have opportunities to propagate plants, remove invasive species, and plant seedlings in restoration sites. Projects take place at one of 15 natural areas in the park or the Presidio Nursery. Field programs include a classroom pre-site presentation. Nature in the City (grades 2 to 12) A variety of observation-based field activities in a park location of your choosing will give your students a sense of how science informs the management of natural resources in the park. Possibilities include Bird Sleuthing, Nature Journaling, and other citizen science projects customized to your curriculum.Contact: Damien Raffa or (415) 561-4449 Self-Guided Programs KIDS on Trails (grades k-3) Each booklet-based experience offers kid-friendly activities, site-based experiences, tips for adults, and a trail map. There are KIDS on Trails booklets for the Ecology Trail (near the Main Post) and the Anza Trail (near Mountain Lake). Quest Adventures (grades 3-6) Presidio Quest Adventures are educational treasure hunts that teach eco-literacy with a fun, place-based team approach to exploring special natural areas in the park. Currently there are two questing booklets available for free to classes: Tennessee Hollow Watershed Quest Adventure and Quest Guide for Presidio Habitat. A Presidio Nursery Quest and Lobos Creek Valley Quest will be available in 2011. Contact: Damien Raffa or (415) 561-4449 |
