Brief Description:

Afterschool bike clubs are the heart of the Presidio Community YMCA’s YBike Program. Bike Clubs consist of sixteen bi-weekly sessions teaching youth bicycle and street safety, bike handling skills, and bike maintenance while developing their confidence, leadership skills, and promoting a healthy lifestyle and environmental consciousness. In later sessions, the groups explore their school’s neighborhood by bicycle.  We currently operate in nine public middle schools in San Francisco, serving 500 students a year.  All bicycles, helmets, and other educational materials are provided.  Each class consists of 10-12 students, allowing our staff to build relationships with students and provide them with individual instruction based on their personal strengths and weaknesses.   Our staff is passionate about guiding and empowering youth to use bikes as transportation.  Afterschool bike maintenance classes are offered at three of our sites. In these classes students learn all aspects of bicycle mechanics through hands-on practice. Students can participate in our earn-a-bike program, which allows them to choose a bike to work on and keep after successfully completing the program.
