Brief Description:

Since 1978, the Environmental Science Center (ESC) at Fort Funston has sought to nurture an environmental ethic among students through experiences that increase awareness and knowledge of both their natural and man-made surroundings. Housed in a recycled army barrack on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the ESC provides classroom and overnight programs that include community-building activities, nature walks, journal writing, night hikes, and campfires. The ESC is sponsored by the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), the National Park Service, the California State Department of Education, and the SF Department of the Environment.
