Brief Description: The Clean Air Challenge is a science-based multidisciplinary curriculum on air pollution for middle and high school students. The curriculum integrates current environmental information related to air quality and health issues with alternative energy solutions. The curriculum features 14 lab focused activities. The curriculum investigates how air pollution impacts human health; the scientific basis for understanding what air pollution is and how it’s formed; how air pollutants can be measured; choices available for improving air quality and asks students to draw conclusions for action based on their study. The Clean Air Challenge meets curriculum standards for biology, earth and physical science. The Air District offers limited teacher training. Teachers trained in the curriculum receive a Teachers Companion workbook with detailed instructions, explanations, estimates for time needed for each part of the curriculum, answer keys and extension activities; a Case Study Booklet that tells the story of two interns investigating air pollution; Data Logs where students record lab results; and a DVD presentation of the case study. Teachers also receive a modest stipend. Teachers interested in being put on an interested parties list for training should contact Jim Smith at jsmith@baaqmd.gov. |
